Finished The Dress!

Gosh I've been a little quiet haven't I?  Too busy knitting!

So the Christmas dress is finished and put away for Christmas eve, hopefully it will be cool enough to wear it.

Now I started working on the baby blanket before remembering, I need to knit Lars first.  Of course I knitted 15 rows realised I had casted on 10 too many stitches, pulled it apart and am now doing it again.

I have done the dangerous thing and logged on to Ravelry.  Oh god, so much knitting to do!

But in other news, oh my gosh I'm going to be a working uni student next year, how cool is that?  I am going to be so damn busy I probably won't have time to knit.

Yeah right.  I'll find time to knit.

Christmas Knitting!

So I did something very dangerous and went to spotlight and lincraft yesterday.  Actually the beginning would be a better place to start.

Last week my great grandmother, my Nan, someone very dear to me, passed away.  So natually I've been a bit upset.  Therefore, knitting more.  It's a funny thing, missing someone who has passed, especially someone like my Nan.  I know she wouldn't want me to be upset, that all she ever wanted was for all of us to be happy, and that makes me miss her even more because she was honestly the single coolest person I've ever known.

Anyway, so I've been a bit snappy, and cranky.  Oops.

But this blog is about knitting!  So I went to spotlight and bought some nice purple yarn and a big ball of rainbow yarn, a circular needle and a new set of bamboo needles.  No idea what I'll make with those yet.  And then I headed to Lincraft and found Christmas Wool!  Now I know facebook tells us we should buy local and all that good stuff, and it truly is good stuff, but I'm knitting my girls Christmas dress myself!

So it's Christmas dress for Liz, then baby blanket for Beth, then skirt for Liz for Sam's party, and then my Metallica blanket.

The Newkid is in the house!!

Alrighty so Jason is finished all bar the border and I am VERY impressed with him.  I've been perfecting my knitting of shading and each one is getting better and better.  So why I didn't leave my beloved for last is beyond me ;)

Okay, so pictures.

Clearly this is the giant chin/jaw of Mr Newsted.

And here we have all 3 completed so far, knitting needles sticking out the top of Jason's head and no drummer as of yet.  OH NOES HOW WILL THEY KEEP DA BEATZ???

Anywho... I've sliced the top of my finger open knitting Jason so every stitch is pain lol but must. keep.  going.

So it's November

November!  I want this skirt finished by December 23, the baby blanket for December 25 and the Metallica blanket whenever it gets done but it's my favourite project right now so I must admit neglecting everything else I'm working on.  The skirt is coming along though.  The pattern is non-exsistent, I'm plucking it from a project I did about 3 years ago and tweaking it slightly.  Happy with it so far.

Working on multiple projects

So the big Metallica knit is probably the biggest project I'm working on.  Scrap that, it is the biggest knitting project I have EVER worked on.

This is me hard at work -

And here's Jason's jaw from the Metallica blanket, that man is all chin!

Now I'm also working on a baby blanket for my sister's first baby due in January, so I won't post a picture of that until I've given it to her.

However I am working on a skirt for Miss 3 so here's the beginning of that

Three projects on the go, I see carpal tunnel syndrome in my future.

Poor Knitting Me

The saga continues, all bar the border Kirk is.... DONE!!

I really like how he turned out.  Now on to the chin!!

Today I replaced my copy of Garage Inc that went walk abouts after a party years ago, before I got married, before the Navy even.  I was driving around on my own listening to So What and there is no way I'd listen to it with my kids.  Now my kids listen to all sorts of music and have spent a great deal of time in my car listening to Metallica but I think we'll stick to disc 1 of Garage Inc which is fine because Astronomy has to be one of my favourite songs EVER!

So I was driving alone and went to Lincraft AND Spotlight buying yarn for this knitting project.  Almost $40 later I'm ready to knit Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Load, Reload, and St Anger.  I need more greys for ...And Justice for All and Death Magnetic and more reds/maroons/oranges for Master of Puppets.  No idea what I'm going to do for the back.  Still considering doing a couple more panels, Black album cover?  S&M panel?  Straight ninja star?  Blank black?  Can you tell I'm flying by the seat of my pants here?

Miss 3 is totally getting into Christmas and often says Santa will bring her Woody.  Hint hint, buy me a Woody? Lol

Drinking tonight, knitting and watching a 3D movie.  Borders are boring.

The Big Metallica Knit-a-thon continues

So James was a smashing success (but don't tell him, I don't want egotistical knitted squares about the joint) so I started on Kirk.  He's looking good so far.  I'll have to keep going before I know whether or not I'm really happy with it, I wasn't entirely sure about James until I cast off the final stitch.  Here, you be the judge.

Actually looking at it like that you can totally tell who it is right away, cute smirk caught in yarn, I do good work.  Ok so maybe if you've spent as much time as me drooling over looking at Kirk's face it would be pretty obvious.  Or maybe it's just me.  Better wait for the finished product.  To work on the chin Jason next or Lars, that is the question of the minute.  Then uncharted territory.  I think I have all the colours to make a start on Kill 'Em All.  Eek!

The Big Metallica Knit-a-thon

I was going to post an "intro" post but I'm so damn excited by my current project that I'm skipping that.

I'm knitting the Metallica album covers into a blanket.

Okay, see the title of the blog, Not Your Nana's Knitting, you probably won't find very many bunny rugs or fiddly shawls and stuff on this blog, if at all.  I have got a WIP of a baby blanket for my sister due in January, and I do have to knit my daughter some shorts for her brothers birthday party in January, but mostly I knit cool stuff.

Who am I?  I'm a 25 year old Australian married mum of two, lover of all things metal with a special passion for Metallica and an extra special passion for Kirk Hammett.  And I knit.  I know knitting conjures up images of grannies in floral nighties making baby booties and watching Dr Quinn Medicine Woman.  I prefer to knit my own patterns watching Some Kind of Monster, Life After People, The Walking Dead etc etc.

And I really like Zombies.

Okay, to the Metallica knit.

So I was listening to the Black Album one afternoon and thought, wouldn't it be cool to knit like the faces from the insert from the album, the contrast really lends itself to being a pretty easy knit and it would make a pretty cool throw rug.

Well one thing led to another, my car magically drove itself to Lincraft and I found myself watching S&M and knitting James Hetfield's face.  Couldn't start with Kirk, if I screwed up his face I'd never forgive myself and I had no idea if it would work.

So now I'm working on a project that when finished will hopefully look something like this...

Pretty ambious project, I know.  It's funny the album covers I was most nervous about doing appear like they will probably be the easiest, Load, the black album faces (not the cover I know but I think it works better than the actually cover even with Jason's monster of a chin), Reload, Kill Em All and St Anger will be the easiest ones.  Even And Justice for All will be pretty easy as it's mostly grey tones but a big fuck you to Death Magnetic, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets with your awesome music and incredibly detailed covers.

Oh you think Death Magnetic isn't a detailed cover?  Look at those lines around the coffin!  Hello Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!!

It all started with the black album faces and has spiralled into a big project, and I'll post here the different sections and then once it's finished and the my other projects, along with other stuff that we're doing and what we're up to.

I have to go clean my house and be a responsible adult now.  But tonight, I get to work on Kirk's face!!!

Oh get your head out of the gutter, that's clearly where mine belongs ;)
